Joomla! is the most widely used open source content management system.

Elin Waring, the president of Open Source Matters , the non-profit that administers the project, said in a post on the Joomla! community portal that targeted fund-raising had enabled the project to pay Louis Landry and Andrew Eddie to each spend one to two days working on Joomla! over the last two months.

(Disclosure: iTWire uses Joomla!, along with a few proprietary extensions, to run this site.)

Waring said the assignments given to the pair were specific.

"The impact of Andrew having large blocks of time on an ongoing basis has been highly visible to people who follow development. We've seen fast movement on highly complex challenges in the ACL and other critical infrastructure pieces while he's wide awake.

"In the case of Louis, in addition to writing code, he's been doing important work in reconstructing the development infrastructure (which will be debuting soon) as well as working with the release team, development coordination and being available for consultation with people working on code," she wrote.

The OSM next intends to examine how this impacts on development processes and the functioning of the broader production working group.

"We'll do assessment of this starting in about 8 weeks (mid-January 2010). At the same time we will continue to monitor 1.6 development and the responses of the leadership teams," Waring wrote.

The financial arrangement was strictly a contractual arrangement between OSM and Landry and Eddie, Waring said.

"The intent is that it have no impact on relationships within the Production Leadership Team or between the Production Leadership Team and members of the Production Working Group.," she wrote.

"The development coordinators are the development coordinators, they have certain responsibilities and authority as such, and they still have them.

"Andrew is a committer and member of the Production Working Group. He still is and will continue to work under the direction of the development coordinators.

"Louis is a development coordinator and he'll continue to work in the same way that he has with the other coordinators. In recent debriefings the development coordinators indicated across the board that they are happy with how the experiment is going."

Waring said the OSM welcomed financial support for the initiative and advised anyone who wished to get involved to email the group.
This suggestion has been raised online in forums like SlashDot, among tweets, in Blog postings and elsewhere.

It appears to have been first raised by Ridenbaugh Press, servicing the Portland area that Linus Torvalds has made his home, and was sparked by Former Vice President – and Nobel Peace Prize winner – Al Gore’s visit to the locality.

Coincidentally, Torvalds was named after 1962 Nobel Peace Prize winner Linus Pauling, but the reason he has been put forth is because of Torvald’s work in developing the Linux kernel, which has subsequently formed the basis of many global projects that collectively make the world a better place.

Well-known beneficial projects that built on top of Linux include the One Laptop Per Child effort and the Human Genome project.

In addition, supporters say, Linux defends computer infrastructure against viral attack, Linux puts low-cost computing power into the hands of those otherwise unable to afford it, and is just generally an all-around marvel in the world today.

To some, the Internet buzz seems to be taken as influential with one commentator stating “probability of a new nominee is rising” although technically that is true, because it stands to reason any person can be nominated while winning is a different matter altogether.

This said, it’s not a simple matter to make a nomination because the general public are not actually entitled to submit nominations.

Instead, only qualified nominators may do so – a select group that consists of members of national assemblies and governments of states, former Nobel Peace Prize winners, Professors of social sciences and certain other fields, as well as a handful of others.

So, the chances Torvalds would genuinely be nominated are reasonably slim, I would think – unless you can persuade the likes of Senator Stephen Conroy or President Barack Obama to do so.

Nevertheless, the topic deserves some consideration. Has Torvalds made a step towards world peace via the invention of his kernel?

As tremendous and beneficial Linux is, I think the answer is no; at least, not in the same sense as the work of Mother Teresa or the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) – working in some of the harshest places on Earth to ensure basic survival by people who hope for clean water more than an open source operating system.

Further, does Torvalds deserve all the credit? Can it be argued his contribution – albeit an important one – is more significant than the vision of Richard Stallman who was the biggest original proponent of the free and open source software movement?

I’m sorry; this is a Linux column, but I just can’t see Torvalds as a legitimate Nobel Peace Prize candidate. Possibly Barack Obama and Al Gore should not have been candidates either, but when we talk about such individuals as Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela it’s clear Torvalds isn’t in that category.

An honorary doctorate in Computer Science I can support, but not a Nobel Peace Prize.

Tetsuya Kitahata is the Chief Executive Officer and President of Terra-International, a graduate of the University of Tokyo, an international social entrepreneur, astrologer, and the editor of ApacheNews.org.

Kitahata has posted a shocking message on ApacheNews.Org, which generally posts links and news about the free open source Apache web server which powers more web sites than any other web server.

Kitahata’s message was not ambiguous. He explicitly titled his post, “I will commit suicide.”

Kitahata explains he “was really disappointed by the Apache’s bureaucratism. And I got a lot of fraud. So tired in life” before signing off with “Sayo-nara.”

Kitahata’s last Twitter posting, 22 hours ago, quoted Napoleon Hill and said “Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success.”

On face value this tweet would be an encouraging business thought that people learn from their failures and improve.

However, after the ApacheNews.org post it is possible Kitahata believes he can somehow effect positive change by eliminating himself. Kitahata posted just days ago on ApacheNews.org about his emotional pain.

My hope is that Tetsuya Kitahata can be reached by those who know him, whether members of the Apache Foundation, employees of Terra-International, friends or family and that he may receive help and counselling. Please, if you know Tetsuya, call him.

Similarly, I encourage any readers who may feel suicidal or depressive or self-harming thoughts to speak to those close to them, and to medical practicioners.

The world’s largest particle accelerator was restarted on Friday, November 20, 2009, several hours ahead of schedule.

It is now at a point beyond where it was in 2008 when it had to be shut down due to electrical connection problems, after being started on September 10.

Specifically, a poorly soldered electrical splice overheated, which then lead to a series of problems that damaged 53 of 1,624 magnets and other parts within the collider.

Steve Myers, the Director for Accelerators at CERN, stated, "We are further advanced now than where we were after five days of experiment last year.” [Reuters: “’Big Bang’ experiment advancing fast”]

The Reuters article calls it a "Big Bang" experiment because LHC scientists hope to recreate the mysterious conditions near the time of the Big Bang, or the time when the universe was first created about 13.7 billion years ago.

This will happen when two beams of protons (going in opposite directions) are collided with one another inside the 27-kilometer (17-mile) long circular tunnel, under the border between France and Switzerland, near Geneva, Switzerland.

The CERN organization (which is short for European Organisation for Nuclear Research), have spent the last year or so fixing the problems that resulted from the first time the US$10 billion accelerator was turned on, along with upgrading instruments and computer software.
